Good work here.  But I have a question.  Why do you make versions of an avatar with different shading, and color balance?

It's probably because she wants to offer different options. Most people who are into avatar-making tend to make different versions so people have more of a choice. I really like the black and white version of the manga-Ilia avatar.

Klarithis hit the nail on the head. Sometimes graphics artists like to provide different versions of their works. We don't want other people editing our work, so offering a variety of options helps cut down on people taking and editing our work as if it was their own.
